I was driving south on 684, listening to Beck’s “Sea Change” and in a sour mood because of the miserable conditions of the road, the drumming of the rain, the wash of the puddles and the joy of navigating LaGuardia traffic when I saw you coming.

A ghostly silver shape with four halos in the grill, unmistakably an e39. I slowed in hopes that you were a real m5, not some halo-ed-up tart and you did not disappoint me. Not only that but the sweet sound of your more-free-than-generally-allowed exhaust system was amazing! The roof rack pointed to a well maintained, much loved daily driver. You didn’t look as you idled past. You no doubt thought me a castoff divorced divorcee in my Oxford Green, convertible E46 M3. No hard feelings. I get that a lot.

I tucked in behind you, my M3 a younger brother drafting his older sibling through high-school. The deep blat of your v8 senior football captain leading the raw rasp of the freshman soccer wing straight 6. The fun of our too-brief familial camaraderie was only hampered by running through heavy rain and standing water while on summer tires.

When in the left lane slowed enough for me to roll up beside you, I gave you three or four revs to 7500, you responded with some wonderful revs and crackles of your own; for a few seconds, a bond of brotherhood, borne from the joy enherent in the possession of a classic thoroughbred, from the deep responsibility we each have in our different ways to care, feed, and rev the snot out of the engine we’ve got.

It saddens me that I lost you around exit 10 as I continued my slog to LGA pick up a workmate.

When I picked her up. Pretty sexy. Lowered but wicked stiff. Went back to stock wheels and springs. Eventually hope to upgrade the wheels
